My son just came running in here like the world was ending ... it's snowing it's snowing ... No way, it doesn't snow here ... it's just rain or maybe sleet I'm thinking. I walk out to the back door ... Holy smokes it IS snowing!!
I'm looking for my gear now, maybe I can slide out for an evening hunt and get back for dinner!

I know this may seem like an odd question, but any idea where I can find an "outline" of different sizes of vanes so that I might be able to cut some of my own?
Re: OmegaBuck Journal '09 « Result #4 Today at 10:29am »
I was thinking of trying that with vanes first, and if I liked the results I could switch to feathers if I wanted to. We got over 900 Vanes on E-Bay the other day for 10.00. It's not like we don't have the vanes to experiment with. LOL

Quickspins are straight, I'm not sure on the weight, or speed of the bow IBO is 300 FPS. I'll know more about the weight and current speed of the bow when Santa shows up!
Regarding the Quickspins ... I've been giving some thought into trying out Feathers. We've got quite a few, but we've got a MASSIVE amount of regular vanes. I think Feathers would be good, just as long as they don't get wet, right?

Bt, of course, is correct - quickspins want to be fletched straight - and you may get away with only two fletch.
However, what is your bow's IBO / current arrow weight and speed? If yours is similiar to the Hornet I am thinking you are underspined and it is showing up when you crank the weight up.

You know what? .... it's gonna be what it is gonna be....in light of the current administration. The majority voted for radical leftists and won the day.
In the end....I could care less what the laws are.
This countries citizenry has been bound and gaged by every form of restriction, under the guise of a public welfare agenda.
The politician, with the aid of a law enforcement agency (which is fast becoming akin to the Nazi guard) has taken (by force) the individual liberties of those who lack the power of rebuttal.
The reason that America has the highest inmate population in the world (per. capita) is due to the fact that there are so many laws which have been set against it's citizens for the purpose of control....within a country which claims freedom by right of birth.
Freedom isn't free....it is only available to those who are willing to risk persecution to achieve it. When the over lord dictates how you live and imposes penalties for those who choose a different path....this is not freedom.
Let them make the act of hunting illegal and I will be out there without care or concern as to the existence of such law.

Got a question, hopefully someone can help me out here. Regarding the arrows I currently have 28" Stalker Extreme 55/70 4" Quick Spin It's said that I should be good for up to 70 lbs ... but I've noticed while they penetrate better at 70 lbs, they don't fly as well. I'm wondering if maybe I'm dealing with a spin issue?

I can honestly say, I feel your pain! I've been thru it so many times since I started looking, it's not funny. You obviously know what I'm talking about. The last one that told me that they could order it ... I said, "I can order the damn thing for myself, and it'll most likely be cheaper since I don't have to deal with your dumb butt marking it up 20%!" Yeah well, needless to say I'm not wanting to go back to that place ... it kind of seemed like a fly by night operation anyway.
The place I've been dealing with is a nice place. The owners are great to deal with, I wouldn't mind paying a little more from these folks! Everytime I've gone in there they help me with anything I may have a question regarding a bow about, then after answering my questions, hand me a bow and say "Why don't you see what you think. I can tell you all kinds of great stuff about the bow, but unless you like it, it doesn't really matter."
Beware of the dealer listings off manufacturers sites!!
These effers have the nuts to tell you they are a dealer, but don't have any in stock. But hey, they can order one for you. I hate it...I can order any bow off the net without shooting one cheaper....but lose the warranty. I get upset when it comes to this part of the archery business...I'll take a time out..

Ok, so after tearing the city apart looking for someone who has an AlphaBurner ... and nobody having one, I find a little mom and pop store right down the road from me (7 miles) that I NEVER knew existed!! I know someone who's going to be getting a call real soon ... but after the holidays. I'm sure they're closed until then ... but maybe tomorrow?
Apa, BOWTECH, Diamond, Hoyt, PSE, Reflex, Ross and I'm guessing Bear, since their name came off the Bear site.

Weathermen suck! Beautiful day, the only thing they had correct was the temp, and it was only off about 5 degrees or so. High was about high 70's? It got up to 75 in the house before I finally had to tap and turn on the air conditioner.
As of 6:48 PM CST ... no storm in the area as far as I can tell. Wind is about the same, clouds about the same, rain ... umm, no. Oh well, all will be well. I woke up this morning, so it could've been a hell of a lot worse.
If I don't say it before it's time ... Merry Christmas everyone!

The bow shop I've been going to was about to hand me the Alpha Max, when they handed over the Maxxis 31 instead. I'll be taking that Alpha Max for a spin ... no reason not to! I heard it was a really nice shooting rig.
Everything else is right on the money. Hoyt is one of those companies that underrates their speed...a very honorable thing.
I went through the same nonsense with these dealers. I wanted to buy the fastest bow made last year, and wound up ordering direct from the company...the APA King Cobra...because nobody had that, or any other speed bow that they were supposed to be a dealer for.
So, I took a chance, and wound up with a real speed demon of a bow, with a great feel...man...I really did a lot of homework, and I'm glad it panned out.
But, the Hoyt was bought after shooting it, which is the way all bows should be bought. You love that DXT, I can tell, and that's one heck of a bow. If you went with a 350gr arrow @ 70# w/28"dl you should get around 305 with a 325 fps IBO bow...except...it's not a Hoyt, and I really don't know how accurate Mathews are with their speeds..I've never owned one, but there are people here that do, maybe they can chime in.
I havent chronoed anything excepy my conquest 2 and I think the best my memory serves me 29" at 70# I was getting 299 to 301 Shooting IBO weight arrows and the bow is rated at 310.

Re: New Bow for the next season « Result #33 Yesterday at 4:07pm »
Although I did like the DXT ... I liked the Maxxis 31 too ... maybe a little more so. Not so because of the draw, or anything like that ... to me it just looked more like a true hunting bow, and when at full draw it felt like the thing was about to send some major speed to the target, which I needn't mention, it did ... I just didn't think about putting a Chrono on it. I did like the heft to it ... it felt slightly heavier which I kind of liked. I'll be shooting the Alpha Max when I get back over to that shop, the old man shot the Monster and fell in love, but that was after he fell head over heels over the DXT ease of draw (shoulder is giving him some issues) He just thought the Monster had more upside to it, which it certainly has more speed potential.
There was a Vulcan ( I think that's the name) up there brand new, bare bow never been shot ... was on sale I think, but I wouldn't dare tell you a price because I have no idea what it was. LOL I forgot.
Mathews vs Hoyt ... I think they're both FINE bows. You probably couldn't go wrong with either brand. That being said, I've shot all the latest and greatest from Mathews. I haven't had a chance to shoot all the good ones from Hoyt. I'll be doing that as soon as possible!

HSUS Pushes for Animal Rightist in the White House
12/23/09
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the largest anti-hunting group in the country, is urging its followers sign a petition urging President Obama to appoint an “Animal Protection Liaison” in the White House. This liaison would undoubtedly be promoting HSUS’s radical animal rights agenda.
The appeal comes directly from HSUS President and CEO, Wayne Pacelle. In it, he states,
“We have developed a change agenda for animals, which outlines 100 immediate steps the Obama Administration can take to help animals -- including millions of pets, farm animals, laboratory animals, and wildlife. With your help, we can ensure the Administration is addressing these critical animal protection issues in an ongoing and sustained way.”
Never before has there been a specific member of the White House staff devoted exclusively to the animal rights issues. Given the current political climate, the amount of influence this appointee might have on public policy raises serious concerns.
“As if having ‘Regulatory Czar’ Cass Sunstein in the Obama Administration isn’t enough, now sportsmen may be confronted with a dedicated animal rightist down the hall from the President, whispering in his ear,”

Why not invite one of the national TV networks to do an investigative report on the deer killing by the GW and sheriff. A spot on the tube for all to see might put a stop to the activity.
So by going to NY, have you found yer land & cabin ? I live in the Ozarks of Mo. I have 5 acres with 37 more with rights to hunt. I live in a 12x18 lofted cabin. I haul all my water til i get my gutters on & use my 4 55 gal rain water barrels. I have no electric power, i live off grid with gen.& Battery bank/inverter. I have a small wood stove fer heating & cook outside under a tarp/cook tent with tin roof i built. Its tuff but i do have local & long distance ph. unlimited & DSL. Its hard living but i wouldn't trade it fer any townie or city life!
New York made the most sense to me, since they need nurses, I'll make more, and BT is there There is a sleeper state in the back of my mind. That state is Maine. Maine has a horrible nursing shortage. Over a thousand openings yearly. I would NOT make as much as I will in Poughkeepsie, but certainly more than I do in Toledo. even Columbus. But I have more than myself to worry about now....
Hmmmm....I have been asked for a few years to come back to Maine and compete with the local oil companies in the central zone.
Hmmmm,,,, One deer a year (if you can find it) and one bear a year (if you can eat it)...I dunno....what to do what to do.

Re: Buckshot06, '09 Journal « Result #46 Yesterday at 10:48am »
I went out and put peanut butter jars on a string and hung them from a branch just high enough that the deer can try to get the treat out the cut out bottom of the jar. If nothing else it my be funny just watching them go crazy trying for the treat while the string just keeps moving and not letting them get a real bite
Onto a new subject:
I was talking with ole9point the other day about how many less deer we have seen this year. I know it has been a hard year for everyone but we should be seeing allot more deer in our honey hole of a spot.
First let me go back a few years.................
Georgetown is the county seat for Brown county Ohio and the GW decided they deer population was to high. He is friends with the chief of police in Mt. Orab were I live and the towns are about 15 miles apart. They was killing deer just for fun and not for herd control and nothing will change my mind of that. They was using high powered rifles (which is illegal in Ohio unless you are above the law) in town limits around neighborhoods. They killed deer on peoples farms that they had no permission to be on and just left them lie to rot. When confronted about this the GW said he didn’t need permission he had the right to do what ever he wants. Well they shot a doe feeding in a woman’s back yard just yards from her house and she was doing dishes and seen the deer shot then heard the rifle shot after the deer feel. The GW and chief of police was about 150+ yards away just shooting deer with no regard with public safety. So the woman was very upset and tried to sue the GW and chief of police but being who they are and there connections the law suite went nowhere.
So back to this year:
We all thought it was strange with the deer population seeming to be down for no reason. Let me say first that so far this is hear say but with what has happened in the past this seems to ring true and the dogs are on the trail to see what we can find out.
Seems that last fall you guessed it the GW and the chief of police was on Mt. Orab owned property just shooting deer and leaving them lay here. The count was about 40+ deer last fall and I know the deer herd here is higher than normal but not to the point of being over populated. You know the saying “ Give an idiot a fur coat he thinks he is King” well these two have just got me pissed off. Not to mention I have never seen a coyote in or around town in the last 13 years I lived here and this year I have seen two. Think these two things are linked.
To top it off they just passed a law in town saying you can’t shoot a bow in town limits and the cops are going around and if they see you have a target in your yard you will get a $125.00 fine. Well I wont stop shooting my bow and if they come by my house they may try to ticket me but it will be a cold day in HE!! before I pay it.
I know nothing will happen but I just had to rant a little.
Wow ... I had no idea. Especially about the loop. The main reason I use one is I don't like how the arrow flies when shooting straight from the string. The things looks like an old Boss 429 on a dirt track. LOL That's not saying much mind you, I still can't put 3 arrows in a decent grouping consistently.
What you are describing would suggest that the bow needs to be flight tuned to the release. Many people see errors when swapping around equipment until that equipment is tuned. However...this is also an indication of drawing past the natural anchor. The release attached directly to the string will cause torque which will be transfer to the arrow on the release.
Speed freaks dont use brass or loops and instead tie in the nock points, which does not effect speed.
However...if the ATA of the bow is to low, there is no recourse but to use the loop.
Quote:
I can't remember if I posted this before or not, but ... with my bow I don't get any wrist slap ... but with all the bows I've shot since I started looking at others, I get slapped every time. I don't know why that would be.
First, look to the brace height between the new bows that you are trying and the old bow that you now have. It is pretty hard to get slapped with 7" but it can happen...especially if your hand position is such that you are torquing the bow. Also...have these shops put a STS or similar string stop on the bow before you shoot it...or bring your own.
Going ot be calling the place out East to see if they have an Alpha Burner that I can get my hands on today. I might also try an Alpha Max, I heard that they're a nice shooting bow.
I purchased the A-Max 32 in Nov. of last year and I wont be looking for a new bow any time soon. If you want a little more forgiving bow the A-Max 35 is one you may want to look at all so but with my A-Max 32 it is sited in for out to 70 yards. No matter what bow you go with, you can't go wrong with a HOYT .

Re: New Bow for the next season « Result #57 Yesterday at 6:45am »
Shooting most bows at I.B.O. will see speeds in some relation to their listing. While some manufacturers tweak the numbers (due to the fact that there are no oversight committees) others actually under rate their bows to provide customer satisfaction.
There are very few bows that can actually match or exceed their ratings...to be very honest.
Also...I.B.O. is based on a 70# bow at 30"...an unrealistic measure.
The most common bow out there is 60# @ 28" Next is 65# @ 28" and then 70 @ 28"
The majority of shooters are in the 27-28" draw range The next slot goes to 28-29" The next group is 26-27" Next is the 25-26 and finally...29-30"
I.B.O. speed is something that is rarely realized by the owner due to the simple fact that the vast majority do not shoot at those specs.
If you want to know if your bow is doing what it is supposed to be doing....here is a simple formula for deductions.
Subtract 1 fps for every pound below 70# Subtract 10 fps for every 1" below 30" Subtract 1 fps for every 5 grns. of arrow weight above the I.B.O. standard of 5 gpp. Subtract 1 fps for every brass nock at the arrow Subtract 4fps for each pair of string silencers Subtract 2fps for string loop
Most people are losing 25+ fps on their hunting bows...which equates to a loss of 5 yards on the pin and 2" (@ 10yrd.) gap at the target

To be honest I'm not sure what they weighed. They were ST Epic arrows ... that's all I can tell you other than they had a target point (weight unknown) and blazers. The DXT was a sweet shooting bow I'll say that, I think I can pick it up for around 750 or so. It was quieter than the Monster, and it was faster, but it was also set about 10lbs heavier on the draw. I used the same arrows on all the bows previously mentioned. They're all at the same shop.
Regarding the Hoyt Maxis 31 .... the draw on that was set at 28" and it felt dead on, while all the other Mathews bows were set at 27 and felt a little long for some reason?
How do you get that kind of speed out of a bow Spiker?

Shot the Monster, Z7, and Maxis 31 today. Found a place about 50 miles away that has an Alpha Burner, may end up over there tomorrow.
Monster was fast. At 62 pounds pull weight it was shooting around 268 - 270 thru the chrono. It felt good, but different at the same time. I'd never shot a double cam bow previously. You could feel that it could really hurl some arrows at nice speeds.
Z7 was nice too. If I had to describe it ... I'd say if a DXT and a Monster had babies, it would be the Z7 ... just my opinion. LOL
Maxis 31 was nice too! Hard to decide really. It seemed like a double cam bow ... but I might be wrong. The wall seemed a little thinner than the Mathews. It seemed faster than the DXT, about the same in terms of sound. It was a little harder pull than the DXT, but not to bad. Just slightly ... but when the arrow flew, you knew it was going down the range like a scalded dog!
If I had to choose today, I couldn't!! I would say it's between all of them. LOL

I have been out a few times but no buck to speak of. I put out a corn feeder and I thought I would try something just to see if it works. I went through my pantry and found 3 jars of peanut butter that needed to be thrown out. I put all the contents of the three jars into one jar. Of course the jars are plastic with plastic lids so I took my battery drill out in the woods with me and screwed the lid of the jar to a tree about 2 1/2" in dia and about 36" off the ground. I then cut the bottom of the jar off and screwed the jar onto the lid I fastened to the tree. I left it there for 5 days and went back yesterday to see if they found the jar of peanut butter and to see if the deer liked it. All the corn was gone about 25lbs of it and the jar and lid was broken off the tree and gone. I did find some small pieces of the lid on the ground and they looked to be chewed on but no peanut butter jar anywhere. I need to come up with a better system and try this one again.

I have shot 8% for nearly 20 years and dont go above or below it. I have gone 12-14% back 30 years ago and stopped when I realized the effect of FOC on flat flight. Same arrow weight corrected to 8% wll gain a yard or two in some instances...depending on the set up.
We have to do something to keep us entertained. I can only shoot paper so long before I go stir crazy....
The Destroyer came in today so I may have to set it up tonight so I can use it Saturday. Turkey runs through Jan 1st. No damage hunts this year so turkeys and pheasants are the target. Oh and the fox that keeps skirting me at 50 yards behind the barbwire fence. Got the predator call and a rabbit decoy to try and entice him to my side of the fence, just along the creek.
Good luck out there. I hope you guys connect. It's always cool to break in a new bow with blood!

I'm pretty careful (as much as a Human can b e anyway) regarding scent. I'm at 15' on one stand, and 16' on the other. I had a Deer under me the other day, looked up at me a couple times, didn't ever get spooked, kept eating Carrots, that is until they were gone. LOL

Adding to FOC « Result #93 on Dec 21, 2009, 5:21pm »
I checked my hunting arrows for FOC Not sure but think I need more up front? PSE Radial x weave 100'S 100 gr BH= FOC 10.0 85 gr BH = 8.6 75 gr BH =7.7 Beman 500 100 gr BH = 10.4 85 gr BH = 9.4 75 gr BH =8.4 If FOC for carbon arrows is to be 12-15 how do I add the extra up front. or do I???
Legally all they would have to do is, step into the ditch and out of the right of way. You would think it is simple to do , but I dont guess so.
Unless it's also private land. These guys don't care who's property they shoot on.
Yeah, nkybuck, how the heck do you scope a decoy, and not know it's a fake? Or better yet, when the arrow hits it, and you see the arrow sticking out...I mean come on, but I guess that's why these guys aren't the brightest.
Be super careful with scent control and get as high as you can in the tree
I second this the higher the better when scent is your main concern. Remember to always consider th angle the arrow is going to go through the deer when you get over 20'.
